Although the Smart car is made in Europe and mostly seen on the European streets, it continues to remain the most widely recognized and acclaimed of all kinds of cars in the US. People are able to recognize this compact and small car instantly for the kind of looks that it brings along with it. Why many a buyer aims to opt for the Smart car is because of its fuel efficiency, performance that is top notch and the amazingly efficient and comfortable drive that it offers the driver as well as the passengers.

The Smart car came about in the year 1993. It started as a joint venture between Daimler-Benz and Swiss watchmaker called Swatch. They formed a new company called Micro Company Car which was based in Biel in Switzerland. It has the best of body build and expertise up its sleeve in the form of its parent company Daimler Benz. This is the same company that manufactures the Mercedes and they were certainly bound to go ahead and bring about the most efficient of cars. The Swatch Company could provide the right kind of youthful and funky designs to the car. The first Smart cars were manufactured keeping in mind the European market, roads especially in the urban centers. This car is the kind that offers great fuel efficiency and is easy to maneuver in the busiest of roads.

The Smart car has the tridion safety cell to it. This was put in the car in order to ensure that the car could go ahead and have enough safety measures. This could absorb any number of impacts and offer the most comfortable of rides to the passengers.

By the year 1998, Daimler bought out Swatch and became the owner. More and more of these cars began to be manufactured and introduced in the market. With each passing day the car began to gain popularity with the buyers.

This kind of popularity spurred on the manufacturers into making more of these cars in other models. The new models introduced were the Roadster and the Roadster Coupe. These two models came about in the year 2003. Then, in the year 2004, there was a Forfour Sedan that was introduced. The buyers did not seem extremely keen and enthusiastic about these models the reason being they thought that they were priced quite high.

The Smart car would have not been able to survive this downward spiral if not for its new CEO who introduced a new car called Fortwo with exclusive features to it such as a new design and built like the City-Coupe. This was an instant success and the second edition of the Fourtwo was manufactured and released in the market in the year 2006. This resulted in 770,000 car sales.

The Smart car is loved for its iconic small looks and the kind of fuel efficiency that it can provide the buyer with. The rising gas prices ensured that Smart cars always had buyers for it.
