Daewoo
Daewoo is a Korean word and it means Great Universe in the Korean language. The car manufacturer unit was established way back in the year 1967 although it is a far younger car manufacturer than the ones in the European and U.S. markets.
The founder of the company Kim Woo Choong had a dream of making this company one of the biggest companies in the world. The Daewoo Company had several other facets to it such as electronics, Telecom, Construction.
The main idea behind the Daewoo cars is that they portray an image of fun and are small and compact making them just perfect for the city roads. The Daewoo Company went financially bankrupt in Korea but continues to thrive as GM Daewoo in certain other parts of the world. The financial troubles that it faced in the year 1999 took its toll on it and it had to shut shop on Korea.
Until the year 1998, Daewoo was the second largest car manufacturer in Korea. Now, there are twenty different divisions that operate under this specific name.
Then, in the year 2001, it was taken over by General Motors and this meant that it had a new management. In the year 2002, Suzuki and SAIC bought a certain percent of stake in it. Some of the popular Daewoo models are the Daewoo Lanos, Daewoo Legnaza and Daewoo Nubira.
The Daewoo Lanos is the smallest car model that has been produced by Daewoo. It is a two door front drive hatchback. It also comes in the version of a four door S sedan. In the year 2001, Daewoo decided to give the Daewoo Leganza a makeover. This is one of the largest and most expensive models from the Daewoo range of models. It got a modern redesign and was re-launched with a six cylinder engine with 180 horsepower to it. It is equipped with a continuous variable automatic transmission. This is a four door sedan that is much bought and sought by buyers.
The Daewoo Nubira is a subcompact car that is mid way between the Lanos and the Legnaza. It is the perfect mid-range in size as well as the way it is priced. The Daewoo Nubira has a front drive sedan and wagon models.
The Daewoo Company is doing pretty well now as it has launched newer models and the production has seen a rapid and consistent growth. It has got a brand name for itself in the form of the General Motors brand.
